We recently read “Why America is Turning Into a Nation of Homebodies” from Fast Company. It got us thinking about Canada.
The trends highlighted in the piece aren’t unique to our southern neighbours; they’re happening here too. Between remote work becoming the norm, online shopping replacing errands and streaming services keeping us glued to our couches, Canadians are spending less time out in the world and more time at home.
But what does this mean for connections? For community?
At Toboggan Flats, these questions resonate deeply with our mission. We believe life is better together—and that starts with creating spaces designed not just for living, but for thriving.

A new normal: Staying in, missing out
Americans now spend nearly 1.5 hours less outside their homes than they did two decades ago.
While similar studies haven’t been conducted specifically for Canada, data from our sister organization Youthful Cities paints a similar picture: Youth in Canada are feeling increasingly isolated, with 76% reporting regular loneliness. And it aligns with what we’re seeing in our cities: empty downtown cores, struggling public transit ridership and the loss of third spaces where people once gathered.
Now, don’t get us wrong, staying home definitely has its perks—no commute stress, cozy movie nights, endless delivery options…
However, it also comes at a cost.
Loneliness and social isolation are on the rise, especially among young people. Research shows that meaningful connections are key to well-being, yet many of us feel more disconnected than ever from our communities.
And let’s face it: traditional apartments don’t exactly help. Small, impersonal units often lack shared spaces or opportunities to meet your neighbours. No wonder many young workers feel like they’re “living alone together.”
Building connections through coliving
This is where Toboggan Flats steps in.
Our coliving model isn’t just about affordable rent (though no one in today’s economy would say no to that!). It’s about designing spaces that foster connection, innovation and community.
Imagine waking up in a bright, modern suite with city views, then heading to that brunch spot across the street with your friends or new neighbours. Picture shared kitchens buzzing with conversation, rooftop lounges hosting game nights and common areas designed for impromptu hangouts. These aren’t just amenities—they’re invitations to connect.
By transforming vacant office floors into vibrant coliving hubs, we’re also helping revitalize urban centres. Young workers return downtown, supporting local businesses and breathing new life into neighbourhoods.
It’s a win for everyone: thriving communities for members and renewed energy for cities.

How can you help build community?
We know staying in may be the new normal, but that doesn’t mean human connection should take a backseat. That’s why we’re committed to creating spaces that inspire people to step outside their comfort zones (and sometimes their front doors!)
So, here’s our question to you: What stands in your way of making meaningful connections? How do you want to reconnect with your community?
Let us know—we’d love to hear your ideas.
Because at Toboggan Flats, we don’t just build homes. We build launchpads for our youth, our next generation. Together, let’s reimagine urban living—not as a retreat from the world, but as a way to embrace it fully.
