Implement a Youth Housing Accelerator Fund in Canada

Last fall, our Toboggan Flats adventure got started thanks to powerful, data-driven insights from our founding partner, Youthful Cities. We heard that young people need more housing—and fast! They feel left out of the conversation, with little hope of getting in.

At Toboggan Flats, we’re committed to building affordable co-living for young workers downtown. We want to build hundreds, and eventually thousands, of units.

But there’s a long way to go—Canada needs millions of units of housing. And, young people still don’t have the voice they need to push for change.

It’s time to give that voice some amplification.

Youth Housing Accelerator Fund

Youthful Cities has launched a petition calling on the federal government to implement a Youth Housing Accelerator Fund to help create one million new units of affordable housing for young Canadians by 2030. We’re joining the call.

Canada is in the midst of a housing crisis, and youth are particularly vulnerable — 60% of Canadians in their 20s are very worried about finding affordable housing. That number sits significantly lower at 37% for Canadians over 40.

However, only one measure in the 2024 federal budget allocated funding directly towards increasing the housing supply for Canadian youth. This was a commitment to building more student homes, for which the federal government allocated $19 million over the next five years.

Although a step in the right direction, this is a drop in the bucket. Canada’s youth deserve more.

Here’s what young Canadians have to say about housing:

We want to make sure young people can afford to live and build a future in Canada.
