As Canada prepares for the Paris Olympics and our men’s soccer team competes in the Copa América, we have some Team Canada news for you, too.
Toboggan Flats: Behind the name
We often get asked about the orgin of the name “Toboggan Flats”. From the beginning, we knew that creating Toboggan Flats would require a team effort—a true “Team Canada.” So we brought in superstar Canadian branding agency Quake to help define our unique housing vision. It’s affordable, downtown, youthful, and centred on co-living. Our guiding philosophy is simple: life is “better together.”
The name “Toboggan” perfectly captures this spirit. Tobogganing, a beloved Canadian pastime, is so much more fun with friends than alone. It’s a catchy, memorable word. An ode to playfulness in these often heavy times. And “flats”? It references both successful co-living flats in the UK and Europe and the transformation of former office floors into vibrant communities. Our logo, crafted by Vancouver letterer Ben Didier, and illustrations by Hamilton’s Sam Island, reflect this unique blend.
Toboggan Flats represents a new way of living, designed to bring people together. We are social beings who thrive in communities. Surrounding ourselves with others opens our minds to new ideas and possibilities. Having a community makes life’s big adventures more exciting, as you have somebody to share those memories with.
And yes, we’re OK with the fact that many outside Canada may not know what a toboggan is!
The Team Canada approach to housing
We aren’t doing this alone. Toboggan Flats was founded by Youthful Cities, a “think-and-do tank” that focuses on data-driven solutions that make cities more youthful places to live, work, and play.
We have assembled our own kind of “Team Canada,” bringing together the best that Canada has to offer. Our research partners are second to none. Our design and build partners are world-class too. Together, we are working to make Toboggan Flats a reality, giving young Canadians a chance at affordable housing.
