When will Canada follow Europe’s lead?

Last month, we shared that we were headed back to school—two Toboggan Flats team members joined the Artof.Co coliving incubator to learn from successful coliving operations around the world. We want to learn from the best so that we can be the best.

The Artof.Co was launched by Gui Perdrix and Mayank Pokharna, two founders who have built coliving companies with over 500 units around the world. As they put it, this is the program they wish existed when they first started out.

Over twelve months, program participants have access to online learning content, resources and exercises, weekly community discussions and mentorship opportunities. The Artof.Co is organized around milestones and supports coliving founders through the phases of conceptualizing, setting up and operating a coliving business.

With a wealth of knowledge and experience at their disposal, the Artof.Co team shared some fascinating—and disturbing—coliving trends and statistics from around the world:

– In order to address international housing needs, we would need to build 96,000 units of housing every day.

– As of late 2022, more than 1.8 billion people did not have access to adequate housing. At least 150 million people were living in permanent homelessness.

– Coliving in 19% cheaper than a one-bedroom in Amsterdam and more in Rotterdam (Julia Martine, JLL, 2024).

– In the first quarter of 2024, coliving in the U.K. received more investment than in any full year on record—£354 million.

– According to a survey, over half of European investors plan to invest in coliving in the next three years.

– Demand for branded/managed living products has gone up about 10% from 2023, at around 46% of total investment volumes in the EU (Julia Martin, JLL, 2024).

– The coliving market in India is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 17% in the next five years to touch nearly $40 billion.

As the need for affordable housing continues to rise, when will Canada follow international interest and invest in coliving as a fast, affordable and quality solution to the housing crisis?

How about a Youth Housing Accelerator Fund in Canada?

We’re joining our friends at Youthful Cities in calling upon the federal government to implement a Youth Housing Accelerator Fund to help create one million new units of affordable housing for young Canadians by 2030.

We want to make sure young people can afford to study, work, and build a future in Canada. Sign the petition.
